Identify your catch
A brownish or gray-green sea catfish with four chin barbels. Its sharp dorsal and pectoral spines lack the long filaments of gafftopsail catfish.
Habitat & biology
Uses coastal and brackish waters, including passes and inland waterways. Males incubate eggs in their mouths. The three prominent fin spines can injure handlers.
Fishing knowledge
Distinguish hardhead from gafftopsail before applying length rules. Avoid contact with the sharp dorsal and pectoral spines.
Species-level knowledge, not current fishing activity or a bay-specific catch forecast.
FWC identification & biology ↗All catfish species are covered by the Galveston estuary advisory. The Ship Channel has stricter guidance.
