Black Crappie
Pomoxis nigromaculatus
For white and black crappie, minimum length limit = 10 inches. Daily bag limit = 25 in any combination.
Identify your catch
Irregular dark speckling and usually seven or eight dorsal spines distinguish black crappie from white crappie.
Habitat on Somerville
Creek arms, open-water shad schools and installed fish attractors provide fishing structure.
Fishing approach
Lake guide guidance: TPWD describes early-spring white and hybrid bass in creeks, followed by open-water schooling activity in summer and fall. Welch Park is noted before the spawning migration.
Fishing guidance describes documented approaches, not a promise of fish activity today.
No active lake-specific advisory or possession ban was named in the reviewed DSHS directory. This does not guarantee that fish are safe to eat.
Harvest permission and eating restrictions are separate.
General species guide
Uses lakes, ponds and slow water, often near submerged cover.
