Black Crappie
Pomoxis nigromaculatus
For white and black crappie, minimum length limit = 10 inches. Daily bag limit = 25 in any combination.

Identify your catch
Irregular dark speckling and usually seven or eight dorsal spines distinguish black crappie from white crappie.
Habitat on Brazos
Shore plants, overhanging brush, fallen trees, riprap and placed fish habitat provide cover.
Fishing approach
Lake guide guidance: TPWD describes spring bass in sheltered cover, crappie around timber and brush, seasonal white bass runs, and catfish with natural bait.
Fishing guidance describes documented approaches, not a promise of fish activity today.
No active lake-specific advisory or possession ban was named in the reviewed DSHS directory. This does not guarantee that fish are safe to eat.
Harvest permission and eating restrictions are separate.
General species guide
Uses lakes, ponds and slow water, often near submerged cover.
